  • The outside of the modern art museum shown is actually the outside of the New England Aquarium in Boston, with some computer-generated differences.

  • The pearl "B" necklace Betty wears is a replica of the famous necklace worn by Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's 2nd wife and mother of Elizabeth I.

  • Mark's name in "Fake Plastic Snow" is Mark Saint-James but in "Don't Ask Don't Tell" his name is Mark Weiner. (From a deleted scene from "Don't Ask Don't Tell", Betty asks Marc: “Your real name is Weiner?” Marc answers: “I had to change it. A gay kid named Weiner? I wanted to beat myself up.”)

  • There was an actual fashion publication titled MODE, geared toward plus-size women. The magazine ceased publication in 2001.

  • Although Fashion TV is mentioned in the series, it is not connected to the real-life TV series or the French channel of the same name.

  • Despite being set in New York and its pilot being filmed there, the remaining episodes have been filmed entirely in Los Angeles. Much like other television programs, stock footage is used to establish that the show is set in New York.

  • The success of Ugly Betty has inspired a Halloween costume in America after the series' debut.

  • In the October 7, 2006, episode of "Saturday Night Live" (1975) cast member Fred Armisen spoofed the character of Betty by playing a look-alike named Fugly Betsy.

  • Betty la Fea, is the title of the original Colombian soap-opera and its other international spin offs.

  • Ugly Betty also has an Indian connection, as the original Spanish soap opera was adapted as "Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin" (2003) which was a major hit on Indian prime-time television. It was shown years before this show aired.

  • On Betty's nightstand sits a copy of the book The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. America Ferrera plays Carmen in the film version of the book.

  • Patricia Field created all of the costumes in the pilot episode. Field, a resident of New York, left the show when production permanently moved to Los Angeles.

  • Show creator Silvio Horta, who is openly gay, addressed rumors about Justin's sexuality by confirming (in a February 2007 USA Today interview) that as Justin ages, he will experience "the journey." Horta also said, "I see myself in him. Growing up, I certainly felt like an outsider at times. But there's this sweet innocence in Justin that sees the positive." In 2008, Horta expanded on this statement, telling a different interviewer that when he started to create the character of Justin, "it really just popped into my head....I tried five different types of kids, and they all felt the same. Then suddenly, I thought - What if you had a little gay kid? I wrote him that way, and it was like: This is fun! This is interesting and different."

  • Due to low ratings in Germany broadcaster Sat.1 canceled the original airing of the series after two episodes and in Austria broadcaster ORF canceled it after 18 episodes.

  • Amanda Tanen is named after Brian Tanen, an Ugly Betty production crew member and writer.

  • The image of the character of Fey Summers is based on that of long time Vogue editor, Anna Wintour.
