NBC is riding the popularity wave of this year's Olympic Games past last weekend's closing ceremonies -- with the event's winningest contestant, swimmer Michael Phelps. Phelps made his first post-Olympics appearance this week on the Tonight show with Jay Leno, and on Wednesday it was announced that he will be making his acting debut while hosting the season premiere of Saturday Night Live on September 13. In addition, the network announced that it plans to air three live hours of the SNL news satire "Weekend Update" on three Thursday nights at 9:30 p.m. in October prior to the presidential election.

Michael Phelps may be the toast of the town. But even with eight gold medals, he still wasn't the most famous athlete an EA Sports-sponsored party in Manhattan Wednesday night. No, that distinction belonged to Tiger Woods, there to promote his new video game, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09. The golfing great – who's recuperating from a serious knee injury – kept a low profile at the bash, immediately heading upstairs to a private suite. But he did take time to chat with the history-making super-swimmer. "Michael Phelps did visit Tiger upstairs," an event rep told People. "No one gets in that room unless Tiger wants them there.

It looks like Michael Phelps is as fast on land as he is in the water. Fresh from his Wednesday with Tiger Woods in Manhattan – at an EA Sports-sponsored party for the golfing champ's new video game – the "Baltimore Bullet" is zipping off to Orlando to rub his broad shoulders with Mickey and Minnie Mouse. On Friday, Phelps, 23, will receive a hero's welcome at Walt Disney World during a special "America's Homecoming Parade," which a theme-park spokesperson describes as "a star-spangled salute amidst confetti and thousands of flag-waving fans." No word yet on whether Splash Mountain will be re-named for him.

The show will kick of the 34th season of the venerable comedy institution, which has had recent success when such sports figures as LeBron James and Peyton Manning have hosted. Supposing you go back 35 years or so, you'll find some great subversive comedy from The National Lampoon. It was The Onion of its day, an offshoot of The Harvard Lampoon, and it led to a series of highly successful and influential comedy albums, which featured the likes of pre-fame Bill Murray, Christopher Guest, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, and others. In fact, the original Saturday Night Live cast would be pretty slim without those Lampoon records.
Its first film was a little something called Animal House, and while the Vacation movies had some big laughs, let's face it: It was all downhill after Animal House.
It's almost shocking to see what has happened to the National Lampoon banner over the years, although it ceased resembling its original glory decades ago. But these days the company is busy suing Paris Hilton for failing to promote Pledge This! and churning out something like

Donald Trump threw yet another party to celebrate his future Trump Tower Dubai, only this time the festivities took place Saturday night in Los Angeles. He paid Christina Aguilera to come out and perform for the crowd, which included the likes of Orlando Bloom, Kate Walsh, and Lucy Liu. Hayden Panettiere looked sassy in her leopard print mini dress, and even talked to the reporters about the recent trouble with her family, reiterating to Extra that it was all blown out of proportion and even saying that it was all about the sheriff wanting "his 15 minutes of fame." Ouch. Of course, the man of the hour, Mr. Trump himself, was there to give himself congratulations on the project that is years from complete, but that sounds about par for the course with him. To see more from the party including Aaron Eckhart, Ali Larter, Donald Trump Jr, Pete Wentz and

Starring Rainn Wilson, Christina Applegate, and Teddy Geiger
Directed by Peter Cattaneo
Rated PG-13
The new comedy The Rocker is both slightly better than its premise and slightly worse than it should be. There are some great little moments that unfortunately are balanced with a couple misfires, although it does showcase something different from Rainn Wilson (The Office) than we've seen before.
Robert "Fish" Fishman (Wilson) was the original drummer in Vesuvius, one of the biggest hard rock bands of all times. Because he didn't have the right look for the band, though, Vesuvius dumped him unceremoniously right as their journey to the top began to take off. It's not by chance that former Beatles drummer Pete Best has a cameo.
Fish has never been able to let it go; 20 years later, Vesuvius is one of the world's biggest bands and he's stuck working in a call center.

Now that "Tropic Thunder" has finally hit the showfront as the only movie to dethrone "The Dark Knight," check out red carpet photos from Los Angeles premiere of Paramount Pictures' "Tropic Thunder" starring Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black, Bill Hader, Justin Theroux, Jay Baruchel, Nick Nolte, Steve Coogan, Brandon T. Jackson.
The film debuted on Wednesday August 13th with $6.5 million from 3,319 locations. Although it has been criticized by the more sensitive folks for its content, critics and fans alike love the film. Two of our writers gave it solid scores with an average of 4/5.
Eric Sloss says:
Ben Stiller is finally back at the top of his game with the uproarious “Tropic Thunder”. He had drifted in mediocre land with his previous efforts “Night at the Museum” and “The Heartbreak Kid”. Stiller is the jack of all trades in “Tropic Thunder”. He is the star, director, co-writer and producer of the film.

Serial killers are scary. So are mutant monsters. But in the collective American imagination, the terror they elicit is often no greater than that generated by malevolent corporate behemoths. Wielding stealthy political clout, recklessly tampering with genetics and technology, and casting morality aside in favor of profit, they're the avaricious power structures that loom large over our public and private lives, covertly pulling strings from their ivory towers while commissioning dirty deeds to be furtively carried out in the shadows of the night. Fueling our Big Brother fears, corporations are usually portrayed as villainous, and have most vigorously thrived in science fiction, where contemporary anxieties about nefarious boardroom conduct can be largely, fancifully projected. Consequently, it's not surprising that our list of the ten best fictional cinematic businesses turns out to be heavily skewed in that futuristic genre's favor, with the lone truly upstanding company to make
